Cultural Food and Music Festival in Kalacha (Kenya)

The festival was organised by Kivulini Trust and took place in Kalacha, Kenya, on 14-15 April 2012 with the support of a number of partners, including The Christensen Fund and the Indigenous Partnership. The festival gathered representatives from almost all the communities in northern Kenya, such as the El-Molo, Gabbra, Rendille, Boran, Konso, Burji, Waata, Saakuye Turkana and Daasanach. Huamanga Food Festival (Peru)

The Huamanga Food Festival was organised on May 25 and 26, 2012 in the northern part of the Ayacucho, Peru, by CHIRAPAQ (Centro de CulturasIndígenasdelPerú) and supported by The Indigenous Partnership with the collaboration of SONIA (Society for New Initiatives and Activities for a Just New World). Mexico Maize Festival (Dec 2010)

The Mexico Maize Festival took place in Northern Mexico from 1-4 December 2010, bringing together local Tarahumara farmers, several NGOs and a government representative from Mexico’s Protected Areas Commission for the maiz criollo initiative. With support from The Christensen Fund Regional Program in Sierra Tarahumara, the festival honoured farmers in a region where over 20 varieties of maize and many varieties of beans and their wild relatives are still found. Mongolia Food Festival (Sept 2011)

The food festival in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, was organised on 3-4 September 2011 by the Indigenous Partnership, WAMIP and TsaaganMyandas, a local NGO. Pastoralists and cultivators from Northern Kenya, Ethiopia and Western India participated in the event. The Mongolians, especially from the rural areas, gather together annually in July for their annual Naadam Festival for “two or three days of serious wrestling action, awesome horse racing and dazzling archery”. The Chiang Mai Food and Agrobiodiversity Festival (Thailand)

On 25th February 2011, the Chiang Mai Food Festival brought together about 500 indigenous peoples from ten different communities of northern Thailand to celebrate their local food and their unique relationship to nature. The festival highlighted the importance of agrobiodiversity and demonstrated the usefulness of such festivals by introducing the Indigenous Partnership to participating indigenous communities. Bilwi Food Festival (Nicaragua)
